Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
