The speculation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
